When to buy new appliances

By Andrew Bell

There may be many reasons in the course of homeownership that you would want or need to buy a new appliance — or a whole new matching set.

If this is something you're thinking about, you would be wise to make these investments carefully: You don't want to spend hundreds of dollars replacing something for a minor issue, but you also don't want to wait until you're experiencing performance issues on an ongoing basis, either.

The first thing you'll need to think about here is the manufacturer-recommended life span, according to The Good Stuff. If you've had your fridge or oven for decades, it might be wise to replace them at some point even if they seem to be working well enough — in part because modern appliances are far more energy-efficient. They can be said to partially pay for themselves in this way.

What about problem appliances?

Of course, if you have an appliance that seems to need a lot of repairs on an ongoing basis, you have to consider a few things. For instance, if you're more than halfway through the life cycle, and repair costs are piling up to the point where those bills are up to 50% of the cost of a replacement, it's probably better to go with the newer option instead of continuing to battle with the existing one.

Other issues to consider

Even if your appliances aren't actively breaking down, years of wear and tear may mean they're not working as well as they used to. Homes.com noted that if you feel you're putting off using your dryer or range because you don't want to deal with the hassle, that's another good sign that you might want to upgrade.

Meanwhile, if your appliances are starting to look worn out — and especially if you've been thinking about investing in a remodel in the first place — replacing what you have to keep your kitchen looking its best can be a good investment.
