When the shoe just doesn’t fit: Signs you need to upgrade your home

By Andrew Bell

Living situations are not a fixed thing in life. Like most things you'll encounter, the circumstances of your lifestyle will depend on a number of factors – both within and outside of your control – and the key to getting the most out of life is to simply figure out the best ways of dealing with them. Of course, the ultimate goal would be to find the perfect property that you and your family can grow old in.

However, sometimes these hopes and expectations can be foiled by the fluidity of life. There are a number of signs that perhaps your current home just isn't working for you as well as it once was, which could signal the need for a change in scenery and housing situation. If you're wondering about your Surfers Paradise property and how well it works for you, here are some things to consider about your home in the long term.

Your family has grown exponentially

One of the main reasons that a lot of families decide to pack up and move homes is simply because they've grown too big to comfortably live within the walls of their old house. This is a fairly persuasive reason to consider moving, especially if you have multiple generations living under one roof.

It's not uncommon to see older generations move back in with their adult children later in life – whether this be in a separate granny flat or another room in the house – and this can lead to further bulges in the family home, especially if there are young children running around the place as well.

Taking this opportunity to sell your property and move into a larger living quarters will help make every much happier in the long run, by giving people back their autonomy, privacy and freedom. This can also make more sense than simply building more rooms onto your existing property, given the amount of time and displacement needed for those types of renovations – especially if the growth is urgent.

Your neighbours are horrible

Let's face it: The reality of life is that you won't always get along with everyone you meet. Unfortunately, sometimes you end up living next door to them and this can cause a multitude of problems in the long run.

Depending on what exactly your neighbours do that irks you the wrong way, it could be worth a look into moving house and leaving them behind. This will help to benefit you and your family greatly, especially if home morale is dropping because of them.

Furthermore, if you do decide to take legal action against them, court cases and police reports can take extended period of time – and financial expenditure – which could be better spent looking for a new home for you and your family.

Dangerous living conditions

Perhaps your home has suffered from major structural damage or isn't suitable for living in, but you don't have the time or finances to take care of essential renovations in the property. Things like pest infestations or horrendous, large scale leaking within the walls of the home could force you out and into a new slice of real estate.

The main thing is to not feel like you're stuck with the problem. Depending on your location and the situation surrounding the house, it's entirely possible that you could find a property investor who is willing to purchase the home and renovate it themselves, giving you an option to get out.

Get in touch with a local real estate agent to discuss the options available to you and gain their expert insight into the best course of action to take in coming future.
