What do the Gold Coast and Westeros have in common?

By Andrew Bell

If you watch television, you probably know Game of Thrones. The show captures the attention of the world, and as it enters its sixth season, millions of people worldwide are tuned in to the adventures of Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister and company.

While the Venn diagram for Game of Thrones and Surfers Paradise property might seem like one with two circles that don't touch, we actually think there are a few similarities between the two that you'll be interested in. Let's take a look at how Westeros and Surfers Paradise might just have a lot in common.

They're both beautiful

Variety reported last year that a whopping 8.11million people watched the finale of the fifth season of Game of Thrones – and for many of those people, the scenery is as big a drawcard as the action. It consistently wins Emmy nominations for production design, and a large part of that is the locales they choose.

From the coastal vistas of Meereen to the sunny landscapes of Dorne, there are many beautiful locations that share a similar aesthetic with the Gold Coast. Shimmering sand, alluring beaches and lush forestation only a stone's throw from the residential hubs – sound familiar?

Yes, we think the breathtaking natural beauty of the Gold Coast and Westeros are quite similar indeed.

They're both primed for growth

There are many conditions necessary for a healthy real estate market. Balanced supply and demand, ongoing infrastructure growth to spawn jobs, and a healthy economy. While this isn't going to apply everywhere in Westeros, there are certain areas that seem like excellent property markets – similar to Gold Coast real estate.

Braavos, home of the biggest Westerosi bank, is brimming with employment. Casterly Rock, home of the Lannisters, is a fountain of wealth, with gold mines providing ongoing job opportunities – anyone in Queensland will know the benefits a resources boom can bring.

Similarly, the Gold Coast real estate market is looking excellent. The light rail project and booming infrastructure thanks to the Commonwealth Games in 2018 have resulted in some very favourable forecasts. In fact, BIS Shrapnel labels the Gold Coast as one of the only property markets to experience double digit value growth between 2015 and 2018! Clearly, we're looking good – just like some of your favourite Game of Thrones locations.

They're varied

As we have noted, there are many different locations across Westeros, from the frozen wastes of the north to the sunny shores of Dorne in the south. While the Gold Coast is nowhere near as big as Westeros, there is a huge variety of views and environments that you can experience when you buy Surfers Paradise property

In fact, the Gold Coast City Council notes that despite the highly urbanised centres, 49 per cent of the region is actually native vegetation! There are heritage listed wetlands and national parks, huge amounts of native wildlife, and mountain ranges not too far from the coastline.

Clearly, both environments are quite varied, and have something to offer anyone with a passing interest in them.

Get amongst the best we have to offer

While we don't have any offices in the fictional land of Westeros, we certainly do here on the Gold Coast. Ray White Surfers Paradise works all throughout the region, bringing decades of experience to people interested in buying, selling, renting or investing in real estate across Main Beach, Surfers Paradise and beyond.

Think of us as your Tyrion or Varys – we know everything there is to know about the lay of the land, and can provide you with all the information you need to make a smart property decision.
