Talking to your kids about moving

By Andrew Bell

If you think moving is difficult as an adult, think about it from the perspective of a child: They may be leaving the only home they've ever known, joining a new school where they don't know anybody and separating (in terms of distance) from their friends. For that reason, when you are buying a home, it's vital that you sit down and talk to your kids about all the ups and downs they might go through, so that they understand what's happening and why — and that you're always going to be there for them.

First and foremost, it's important to frame this as a positive change in their lives. Domain noted that while they may be overwhelmed by the prospect — and understandably so! — you need to be there to talk about how exciting this will be. Maybe they'll get a bigger room or a backyard they can play in for many hours to come, or their new school will present exciting new opportunities.

No matter what, you should always accentuate the positive without dismissing their concerns.

Making the introduction

Even before you're ready to move in, take the kids by to at least see the house they will be moving into, and give them time to absorb the change. That way, they can see that there's nothing scary about it, and perhaps start picturing themselves in the home just as you, as a buyer, already have.

Firm but fair

In many cases, when you tell a child that they will be moving, they may beg and plead to stay where you currently live, and you have to be as clear as possible that there's no wiggle room on this, according to The Spruce. Be straightforward: This is final, it's going to happen and it's going to be OK for everyone. When having this conversation, it can also be a good idea to take as many questions as the kids may have, and answer them honestly. That way, they feel they're being heard and understood, even if they don't actually have a say in the decision.
