How to sell your home while raising a family

By Andrew Bell

If you are thinking about up-sizing your home to accommodate a growing family, you may have some concerns about what effects the sale process will have on your children. After all, getting a home ready to present to would-be buyers is difficult even in the best of times, and when you have one or more rug rats running around, it becomes that much more complicated.

One of the simplest ways to avoid these headaches is to avoid putting your home up for open-house viewing, instead only having potential buyers stop by for scheduled showings when you can temporarily get the kids out of the house, according to HomeLight. When you do that, you can trust your real estate agent to show prospective homebuyers all the ins and outs of the house on a schedule you decide beforehand.

Getting the space ready

Of course, having a plan for how you will show your home is one thing. Actually getting every room prepared for that showing when you have kids is entirely another. Many parents will strive to relegate their children’s stuff during this process to those kids’ rooms. While there’s only so much picking up toys and clearing out clutter you can expect in those spaces, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make every other room as sparkling-clean as you can.

Explaining the situation

For many parents, though, it’s not the cleaning up that’s the problem: It’s explaining to the kids why you’re moving, and what that means. According to Perfect Agent, younger children in particular don’t always understand why you’re packing up or moving all their stuff, and can take it badly if you don’t carefully walk them through what’s going on. A great way to deal with this (understandably) emotional issue is to work with the kids on what must be packed away and what they can keep playing with. This can help tide things over even if the home-selling process goes on for days, weeks or months.

Selling a house can be a tough thing for your family even in the best of times, so it’s always important to have a highly experienced, professional real estate agent by your side throughout the process.
