Get fit this summer in Surfers Paradise

By Andrew Bell

With the sun out on the Gold Coast, it's time to get outdoors and enjoy some of the benefits of owning real estate in Surfers Paradise. But rather than just whiling the days idly away, now is the perfect chance to make use of your beautiful surroundings to get fit over summer.

We look at some of the best ways to get some exercise in here at Surfers Paradise.

Surfing in Surfers Paradise

A little obvious, we know, but carving up the waves is a huge drawcard for many Surfers Paradise residents and visitors alike.

If you've always fancied surfing but never had the chance to do so, why not give it a go? There are several great surf schools right here, such as Get Wet and Surf in Paradise, where you can try your luck standing up on the waves. In addition, the water in summer is reasonably cool and refreshing, giving you respite from the Aussie sun.

According to the Victoria government's Better Health Channel (BHC), surfing can have many benefits for your health, including improvements to your leg and core strength gained from manoeuvring the board on the waves, to upper body and arm strength from paddling. Surfing can also be good for your cardiovascular health thanks to the effort required in paddling to and from shore.

Cycling in Surfers Paradise

On your bike! There are plenty of opportunities for cycling enthusiasts and weekend cruisers alike to enjoy riding around Surfers Paradise. Feel the sun in your face and the wind whistling over your helmet (safety first) as you pedal down one of the shared pedestrian lanes, or one of the dedicated cyclist lanes set up by the City of Gold Coast.

The local body states that there are now some 800 kilometres' worth of bikeways to be enjoyed along the city's parks, neighbourhoods and foreshores. You're not only restricted to urban cruising, however. There are some great off-road trails to be found in the area, with all types of routes frequently found on the Map My Ride website.

Why cycle? Health professionals recommend we partake in at least 30 minutes of exercise daily to support our overall health and wellbeing. Hopping on your bike is a fantastic way to get this exercise in.

Running in Surfers Paradise

We've discussed why walking is a big deal in Surfers Paradise, but it's also an excellent place for a run. Even if you've never been a runner, there is no better place to pull on your trainers and take a jog.

From your Main Beach real estate, it's an easy trip down to the golden sands of the beach, where you can swap concrete for the smell of the sea and the lapping of the waves.

By doing your morning run along the shore, you can also reap the benefits of your environment – running on the beach can actively engages your calves, ankles and arches due to the shifting of the sand as your feet strike it. Stick to the wet, more compacted sand near the tide for a more pleasant experience, as well as to lessen the chance of losing your footing.

The health benefits of running certainly are many, from calorie-burning, to cardiovascular health and fat stripping. There are also all the feel-good endorphins to consider, as well as the benefit of running for supporting bone strength, as noted by the BHC.
