Cleaning tips for the kitchen

By Andrew Bell

If you've ever found yourself tidying up a kitchen — to almost any extent — you no doubt understand that this is one of the most difficult rooms in a home to get clean and keep that way. However, it doesn't have to be a big, involved process, as long as you are on top of the effort and working on it consistently.

The following tips should help you clean the kitchen with confidence going forward:

1) Don't let cleaning work pile up

We've all been there: You realise it's time to time to clean up the kitchen because dishes have piled up in the sink, the trash can is overflowing, and the floor hasn't been swept in weeks. Homes to Love recommended becoming more proactive about doing little cleaning tasks every day, rather than letting things get out of control and creating a multi-hour project.

2) Dust from top to bottom

One thing many people don't do in the kitchen — but which they deal with diligently elsewhere in the home — is dusting. If your cabinets don't go all the way to the ceiling, you have to be highly attentive to clear off that dust first. Then, work your way down on every shelf and over the top of the fridge, along the surface of the countertops and so on.

3) Make sure you keep spaces organised

You have no doubt opened a drawer or cabinet and thought, "That doesn't go there" or "this is a mess," and that's because people often just "put things away" willy-nilly in the name of getting it done, according to The Spruce. Be a little more deliberate about this task and you'll never scramble to find that missing spatula again.

4) Give all surfaces the occasional deep clean

Even if you're generally good about wiping down countertops after food preparation, it's always a good idea to apply some surface cleaner and really scrub away once in a while. That way, even the most deep-seated germs and stains are taken care of.

If you're giving the kitchen a deep clean ahead of a sale, that's almost certainly not all you'll need to take care of to keep your house looking its best.
