5 signs it’s time to sell your home

By Andrew Bell

When people decide to sell their homes, they may do so for a wide variety of reasons. Some need to move due to career shifts, others because their family is getting bigger, kids are finally moved out or they simply want a change of pace.

However, still more homeowners may not know exactly when they should move, and if you find yourself on the fence about this decision (which is a big one, no doubt) there are more than a few things you need to consider. However, if any of the following issues apply to your situation, most experts would say that's a good indicator that it's time to sell your current home and start looking for something else.

1) Your property value has skyrocketed since you moved in

All over Australia, many homeowners have seen their property values rise, and if this is the case for you and you're at least thinking about selling, a move is certainly worth a look, according to Perfect Agent. Obviously, you will have to account for how rising values affect the properties you might be looking at buying. However, if you live in a particularly "hot" area, your options may be wide open.

2) The neighbourhood is changing in ways that don't meet your needs

People and neighbourhoods alike change over time and the person you were 10 years ago might not have moved in the same direction, or at the same pace, as where you live. If those things don't quite line up like they used to, you might want to look at options that are more your speed in 2021.

3) You feel financially squeezed

Everyone goes through ups and downs when it comes to their finances, and the cost of maintaining your home might not be ideal depending on your personal circumstances at this time. HomeLight noted that if this is a persistent problem and you find yourself struggling to pay the bills more often than not, downsizing or finding a new arrangement might be advisable for your long-term financial (and mental) health.

4) You have ample savings to upgrade with your family

On the other hand, if you've been thinking about moving for some time and you've built up a sizable savings account with the idea of finding a bigger home for yourself and your family, this might be a good time to sell. As long as you can make sure you're fully prepared to enter the homebuying process with a specific budget in mind, and you believe you can find something that aligns with your needs, selling could be advantageous.

5) There are no big issues to take care of with the home

Finally, when you sell your home, you certainly want to get the best price you can, and that means making the property as presentable and functional as possible. Considerable advised that if your home has no nagging issues with drafty windows, unreliable appliances or anything along those lines, you're probably ready to put your best foot forward as a seller.
