3 free family activities on the Gold Coast

By Andrew Bell

The Gold Coast is known for being a sunny tourist destination filled with exciting attractions and delicious food to eat. For locals living in Surfers Paradise with big families, however, it’s important to find things to do without breaking the budget. Here are three of our picks for free family-friendly activities on the Gold Coast.

Feed the lorikeets at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Bird lovers rejoice! Pack the kids into the car and head to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where every day at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m you can watch the vivacious rainbow lorikeets during feeding time for free. For this activity no entry to the sanctuary is required, but with an extra gold coin donation you can feed them yourselves. It’s a good idea to pep talk the kids first – especially the wee ones. Rainbow lorikeets are known for both their cheekiness and their confidence. They will have no problem hanging out on your shoulders, which could frighten unsuspecting children.

Build sandcastles at Main Beach

It’s no secret that Main Beach is the crown jewel of the Gold Coast. From the soft white sand to the stunning strata skyline, it’s the perfect place to relax with the family under the sunshine. There’s plenty to do on a beach day out. A sandcastle building contest will stretch the kids’ creative muscles as well as providing some healthy competition, while a paddle in the shallows of the ocean is a great way to cool down. Make sure you’ve got a hat, some SPF and sunglasses on hand for everybody to combat the suns rays while you play.

Bike along the Gold Coast Oceanway

Great for getting the kids out of the house and adding some exercise into your day, a cycle along the Gold Coast Oceanway is the perfect way to spend a sunny day with the family.

The route is anything but boring. With a front row view of the coast, there’s no telling what sort of sights you’ll see as you cycle – although rumour has it this is a popular track to spot whales and dolphins. It’s also a prime picnic opportunity, as there are barbecue facilities and bathrooms along the way if you want to make a proper excursion of your outing.
